Jason and Kasey were married at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Barre Mills, then brought everyone five minutes down the road to Fox Hollow Golf Course for the reception. This wasn’t our first time with this family — we’d photographed Kasey’s sister Miranda’s wedding to Ryan, held at St. John’s United Church of Christ, a couple of years before, and Kasey’s mom was every bit as warm and hands-on the second time around, helping both of her daughters plan a wedding in back-to-back years. Some families are just like that: easy, glad to have you there, the kind that makes a wedding day feel like being folded in rather than hired.

We’d already spent an afternoon with Jason and Kasey once before, out on their family’s farm near West Salem for a snowy winter engagement session — and on the wedding day itself, we brought them back to that same farm for another round of portraits before heading over to Fox Hollow. Two different seasons, same stretch of land, same two people; it felt less like a first meeting and more like picking up right where we left off. Kasey told us afterward that’s exactly why they chose us: “you get to know us as a couple, which helps you create real-life, in-the-moment pictures.” That’s more or less our whole approach in one sentence, and we didn’t even have to say it ourselves.

Fox Hollow itself deserves its own mention. Family-owned and operated since 1994, it sits on 120 acres of the gently rolling hills that fill this stretch of La Crosse County, just outside Barre Mills and about ten minutes from downtown La Crosse. A creek runs along nine of its holes, and one green sits on its own island — one of only two island greens in the entire state. For a reception, that adds up to a genuinely scenic golf-course backdrop, rolling green in every direction with water in view. The event center backs it up with a 10,000-square-foot indoor space that holds up to 300 guests, plus outdoor areas for cocktail hour, so a couple isn’t stuck choosing between charm and comfort.
