Cari and Owen got married in the barn they built. They didn’t design a wedding venue and hope people liked it. They built a life on a farmette outside Spring Green, got married there themselves, and then decided to share it.

The barn dates to 1892, restored rather than rebuilt, so the original wood and bones are still doing the work under new wiring and a new roof. It sits in the Driftless Region on the outskirts of Spring Green, about 42 miles (an hour) west of Madison. American Players Theatre, Taliesin, and the Wisconsin River are all five minutes away, worth knowing if you’re planning a rehearsal dinner or want somewhere for guests to spend a Sunday morning.

Ceremonies work indoors or outside. Reception seating handles up to 200 guests, and that number includes your wedding party. A separate building holds a permanent bar and a private dressing suite, so you’re not renting a second tent just to have somewhere to get ready.

What we love about shooting here

– The light. Late afternoon in Spring Green does something specific, and the barn’s position catches it without any help from us.

– Cari’s vendor list. If you’re still building your team, ask her directly before you Google anything. She’s been curating it for years.

– The sky after dark. No light pollution out there, so if your reception runs past sunset, the Milky Way is genuinely part of the night.

– Two ceremony options. Indoor and outdoor both work here, so weather doesn’t have to be a whole contingency plan.

– The scale. Big enough for two hundred guests, personal enough that it never reads like a rented hall.

Capacity tops out at 200, including your wedding party. There are concrete pathways to both the upper and lower levels of the barn, plus an accessible single-stall restroom, and attendants help with parking on the day.

Chair and table setup and teardown are handled by Octagon Barn staff. Decor is on you. Open flames aren’t allowed within 50 feet of the barn, so factor that into candle or sparkler plans. The venue coordinator works with your vendors and troubleshoots logistics. That’s different from a day-of coordinator, so if you want someone pinning boutonnieres and running the schedule, book that separately.

Timing Your Day for Ridgetop Light

Norskedalen sits down inside a coulee, where the west ridge takes the sun away 30 to 45 minutes before official sunset. The Octagon Barn sits up on open ground, where you get the whole sunset, right down to the horizon.

That changes how you build a timeline.

You actually get golden hour here. On most Driftless properties the sun disappears behind a hill well before the official sunset time. Not here. Plan portraits for the real golden hour and you will get it, which makes the last hour before sunset worth protecting on your timeline.

The tradeoff is the middle of the day. Open ground with little tree cover means midday is bright and contrasty. If your ceremony lands between 11 and 2 in the summer months, plan for harder light and lean on the barn interior or shaded spots near the buildings for portraits.

The barn is your weather insurance and your light insurance. Because the octagonal structure lights so evenly, a gray day here does not produce the dim, one-directional light most barns give you.

Then it gets properly dark. Spring Green is far enough from any city that the Milky Way is visible on a clear night. If a night portrait or a late exit matters to you, this is one of the few venues in southern Wisconsin where the sky cooperates.
