The Best Intimate Wedding Venues in Wisconsin

Just in case you are planning or dreaming of a having an intimate wedding on a lake in Wisconsin (because we dream of it even though we have been married for over a decade)… here is a list of a few places that we think would be great to host a select few of your closest family and friends!

Most of these houses and cabins are located in rustic settings and almost everyone has amazing secluded waterfront property that we think would work for a wedding weekend. We listed the number of people that each place can sleep on beds, but you will have to check with the owners to see how many non-overnight guests you can invite. (In case you are wondering this intimate ceremony below took place in Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island)

Southern Wisconsin

Prevailing Winds Lodge – Blue Mounds (5 guest rooms) – A 5,500 square foot full log lodge on more than sixty acres of prairie and hardwood forest, half an hour west of Madison. Small ceremonies work indoors by the great room fireplace or in the sunroom; larger ones move up to a tent on top of the prairie. We photographed Emma and Devin’s wedding here, food trucks and all, and got a sunset and a rainbow over the tent for good measure.

Camp Wandawega – Elkhorn (Sleeps 55) – A 1920s lakeside camp on the National Register of Historic Places, rented as a two-night exclusive buyout. See our full Camp Wandawega venue guide for costs, capacity, and the practical details.

Big Sky Barnhouse – Spring Green (Sleeps 20) – A barndominium on 100 private acres with its own indoor zoo — llamas, ponies, peacocks, goats, and sheep, all under one roof — plus a pool and hot tub, a movie theater, and indoor pickleball and basketball courts. Easily the most amenity-loaded property on this list.

Siebkens Resort – Elkhart Lake (Ceremony up to 50 seated) – A historic downtown resort a short walk from the lake, with Siebkens Beach set up for intimate outdoor ceremonies. Guests can stay in traditional rooms or modern condos on site, and the Stop-Inn Tavern is a built-in spot for a rehearsal dinner.

Mukwonago Lake House – Mukwonago (Sleeps 20)

Justin Trails Resort – Sparta (Sleeps 22 plus camping) – Tucked into a secluded Driftless valley, with a cluster of big Norwegian-style buildings that carry real character: a log cabin, a yellow farmhouse, and a barn with redone floors that dances well. Llamas live right beside the ceremony area and spend the day making faces at guests. See Eva and Travis’s wedding at Justin Trails for a feel of the place.

Red Clover Ranch – Soldiers Grove (Sleeps up to 19 across 5 cabins) – Twenty miles south of us here in Viroqua, this 79-acre Driftless retreat center has a climate-controlled barn for the ceremony, a sauna and bathhouse for the weekend, and a kitchen turning out farm-to-table meals from a local chef. About as close to home turf as this list gets.

Elderflower Retreat – Spring Green (Sleeps 6 to 8, great room fits 25 to 30) – A Savanna Institute agroforestry farm south of the Wisconsin River, with a view of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin across the valley. Small weddings are welcome in the great room or out on the ridge.

Maxwell Mansion – Lake Geneva (Ceremony and reception up to 100) – An 1856 mansion turned boutique hotel two blocks from the lake, with 28 rooms across three buildings, a ballroom that seats 40 for dinner, and gardens with a fountain and croquet lawn for the ceremony itself.

Northern Wisconsin

Lakeside Mansion with Heated Pool – Minong (Sleeps 62) – The largest single rental on this list by a wide margin, and one of the few that can sleep an entire intimate wedding guest list under one roof.

Spacious Family Getaway with Pontoon – Minong (Sleeps 24) – North of Rice Lake, with a pontoon for the lake and room for two dozen.

Lakefront Secluded Multi-Family Retreat – Pickerel (Sleeps 23) – Two cabins plus a main house and a game room, about forty-five minutes north of Green Bay.

Stout’s Island Lodge – Birchwood (Sleeps roughly 80 to 90) – A private island on Red Cedar Lake with 40 to 43 guest rooms across the main lodge and cabins. The lawn tent handles up to 175 for a reception, so this is the rare property that scales from intimate to full-size without ever leaving the island.

Door County

Gordon Lodge Boat House – Baileys Harbor (Ceremony up to 50) – A lawn ceremony site with a beach, seating around fifty, at a long-standing Door County resort.

The Boynton Chapel at Bjorklunden – Baileys Harbor (Fits 36 inside) – Less a full venue than the coolest historic chapel in the state, a hand-built Norwegian stavkirke that seats 36. Worth considering as a ceremony site on its own, or simply as a backdrop.

Maxwelton Braes Lodge – Baileys Harbor (Onsite lodging up to 60, event room seats up to 175) – A 1930s lodge in the middle of its own 18-hole golf course, with a full property buyout available and an event room with a stone fireplace and exposed beams for the reception.

Still Bend – Two Rivers (Sleeps 6) – A short drive south of Door County, this is the real Frank Lloyd Wright house from LIFE magazine’s 1938 Dream House feature, sitting on the East Twin River near Lake Michigan. Four bedrooms, National Register listed, and yes, weddings have been photographed here.

Lake Superior and the Far North

Lake Superior Barn – Superior (Sleeps 20) – A 4,250-square-foot barn built from the reclaimed lumber of seven turn-of-the-century Minnesota barns, on 320 private acres 30 minutes east of Duluth. Six bedrooms, four bathrooms, a sandy Lake Superior beach, and no cell service or TV — just cards, books, and the closest neighbor miles away.

Madeline Island Lake Home – La Pointe (Sleeps 15) – Featured in Midwest Monthly Magazine, with 64 reviews and an Exceptional rating. Three minutes from Big Bay State Park, with enough room for a big wedding weekend under one roof.

Madeline Island Beach House – La Pointe (Sleeps 16) – Lakefront with its own beach and a pool table, two minutes from Big Bay State Park and a short drive to the Madeline Island Museum.

Little Girl’s Point – Gogebic County, Michigan – Just over the border rather than in Wisconsin, but close enough to belong on this list. A county park on the Lake Superior shore with an agate beach and big water. We photographed a Lake Superior wedding up this way.

Intimate and Micro Wedding FAQ

What counts as an intimate or micro wedding?

There is no official line, but in practice a micro wedding is usually under about 30 guests and an intimate wedding runs to roughly 50. The distinction that actually matters is not the headcount, it is that everyone present is someone you would recognize across a room. Once you pass that point the day starts behaving like a large wedding regardless of the number.

Can you rent a house or cabin for a wedding in Wisconsin?

Yes, and it is one of the better-kept secrets in the state. The rentals on this list sleep anywhere from 12 to 55. The catch is that a rental home is not a wedding venue, so you need to confirm with the owner directly that events are permitted, how many non-overnight guests can attend, and whether there are noise or parking limits. Some owners are delighted; some will say no. Ask before you fall in love with the photos.

How many guests can actually attend if the house sleeps 20?

Usually more than sleep there, but the number is set by the owner rather than the bed count. Sleeping capacity and event capacity are two different figures, and the second one is the one that governs your guest list. Plan on some guests staying at a nearby hotel or rental either way.

Is a rental house cheaper than a traditional wedding venue?

Often, though not always in the way people expect. A weekend rental can cost less than a venue fee, and it folds lodging in for your closest people. But you are bringing in everything else: catering, rentals, tables, chairs, and often a tent. Think of it as a DIY wedding in a beautiful setting. The logistics are yours to coordinate.

Can we get married in a Wisconsin state park?

Yes. The intimate ceremony pictured at the top of this page took place at Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island. Wisconsin state parks generally require a vehicle admission sticker for every car and, for a gathering, a special event permit arranged in advance with the park. Group sizes are limited and specific spots may need to be reserved, so contact the individual park early rather than assuming.

What should we look for in a rental house for a wedding?

Four things, in this order: written permission from the owner to hold an event, a realistic backup space if it rains, parking that will not enrage the neighbours, and bathrooms in some sensible proportion to your guest count. Everything else is aesthetics, and the aesthetics are usually the easy part with these properties.

Do we still need a photographer for a small wedding?

That is your call, not ours. What we will say is that small weddings tend to be the ones where the photographs matter most afterwards, because there were fewer people there to remember it with you. Our own intimate wedding and elopement coverage starts at $2,000, and it is often a single photographer rather than two, which suits a smaller day better anyway.

When is the best time of year for an intimate wedding in Wisconsin?

The shoulder seasons work better for small weddings than for large ones. Late May and September or early October give you comfortable weather and much better availability at these properties, since you are not competing with peak summer vacation rentals. Winter is genuinely viable for a micro wedding in a way it is not for a hundred and fifty guests.

Choosing an Intimate Wedding Photographer in Wisconsin

Small weddings aren’t a smaller version of a big wedding. They photograph differently, too.

With fewer guests, the day slows down. There’s more room between moments, fewer logistics pulling attention away from people. That pace suits a documentary approach better than almost any other setting. We can stay back and watch instead of working through a list of required portraits, and the photographs tend to reflect that.

We cover most intimate weddings and elopements with a single photographer rather than two. One person is easier to have around on a small day, and at a wedding of twenty or thirty people, having two photographers circling the room starts to feel like an imposition rather than a service. Coverage for intimate weddings and elopements starts at $2,000.

A few examples of what these days look like: Jonathan and Ariel’s heartfelt intimate wedding, Brianna and Luke’s intimate Wisconsin wedding, Megan and Julian at the Grove Redfield Estate, and Heather and Scott at Camp Wandawega. They all look different. That’s the point.

Family cheering for bride and groom at intimate wedding

We're on a treasure hunt for beauty. We want our images to take you right back to the grand moments of your day, and to the milliseconds that flew past, the ones you couldn't stop to breathe and look around and appreciate while they were happening. We don't invent those moments. We recognize them.

Our couples trust us to document the people and moments that matter most to them, which frees them up to spend the day with each other instead of with us.

We're rooted near Viroqua, in Wisconsin's Driftless Region, a small foodie-and-outdoors town that shaped how we see beauty in everyday moments. From there we travel across the state, with Madison and Door County among our most-photographed areas, alongside Milwaukee, Spring Green and La Crosse. Nineteen years in, we still don't take the trust of a wedding day lightly.
